Being a Wisconsin native and as a 'walk-on' to the University of Wisconsin, it was a privilege to graduate in pharmacy and play Big Ten basketball in the 1950s. Our contribution to University Athletics, the Athletic Training Education Program and the sports medicine facilities is very important to me. Curt Mueller (’57 BS Pharm) |
| | Words, mere letters in black and white, will never begin to describe the impact and scope of the 2008 financial crisis. It affected the entire spectrum, from individual wealth to the banking and financial industry as a whole. The endowment of the UW Foundation was not immune; however, it held its own in comparison to the benchmark returns of many asset classes.
At the Foundation, we are especially aware of our responsibility to manage your gifts, report performance and hold the line on expenses. Compared to other years, 2008 was not outstanding in terms of results. Compared to the overall economy, to peer institutions and to our ability to fulfill our commitment to the University, the investment decisions made two years ago have proved far-sighted and sound. We have not been forced to sell assets to raise cash and are positioned to take advantage of buying opportunities. |

 | Our expendable fund, dollars the University uses primarily for current needs, preserved capital in 2008, thus accomplishing its primary goal, simply stated: one dollar invested is still worth one dollar.
The financial highlights include: total assets under management of $2.274 billion; contributions, including pledges receivable, of $161 million, and more than $203 million in support transferred to or for the benefit of the University.
The UW Foundation staff and board believe strongly that expense management is a top priority in achieving good stewardship. Over the past five years, the UW Foundation’s average cost of raising a dollar has been 6.9 percent, well below national averages. |
