Director of Development- Letters & Science

The University of Wisconsin Foundation is seeking an experienced development director to plan and execute the private funds development program for the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in collaboration with seven other Directors of Development on the L&S team. This position will involve fund raising for a variety of departments within the liberal arts, with a focus on the Department of Political Science, the La Follette School of Public Affairs and the Center for Jewish Studies. The UW Foundation is a private non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging philanthropy on behalf of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Development directors are employed by the UW Foundation, but work closely with the L&S dean and faculty to advance private support for the College. The College of Letters and Science is the University’s core academic unit, with approximately 17,000 undergraduates, 4,000 graduate students, 950 faculty, and 175,000 alumni. Its 39 departments encompass the arts and humanities, social sciences, and physical sciences. In 2007, the College received approximately 19,000 gifts totaling nearly $21 million.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation, with emphasis on major gifts
  • Facilitate interaction among deans and faculty to develop proposals and information about gift opportunities for prospective donors
  • Coordinate and work with volunteers
  • Collaborate with UW Foundation colleagues to create strategies for shared prospects
  • Other funds development activities as assigned by the Foundation

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of a bachelor degree
  • Experience in fund development or related activities
  • Strong organizational, oral and written communication skills
  • Self-directed, team player who has a strong work ethic and ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work effectively with University officials, faculty and prominent alumni
  • Ability to meet travel requirements (approx. 25%)
  • Interest in promoting the liberal arts
