I spent a good deal of my working career traveling around the world, and that showed me a lot of what was out there beyond the United States. I jumped at the opportunity to give UW students the chance to taste that. | The University of Wisconsin's Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has enjoyed an unprecedented run of academic and athletic success and now ranks among the finest athletic programs in the country.
Since 1990, Wisconsin has won NCAA team championships in men’s cross country, men's and women’s ice hockey, men's soccer and men's crew, and has crowned many individual national champions. The Badgers consistently rank among the NCAA's top all-sports programs in every year of the Director's Cup rankings and the Big Ten Conference's annual all-sports ranking.
In addition to the athletic success, Wisconsin ranks among the league leaders in the number of academic all-Americans, consistent with the proud commitment to academic excellence.
Wisconsin fans continue to show their support in a variety of ways. In fact, the UW was the only school in the nation that had six sports ranked in the NCAA’s top 20 for home attendance in 2007-08. That included men’s hockey (first), women’s hockey (first), volleyball (third), men’s basketball (seventh), football (13th) and women’s basketball (15th). Wisconsin also boasts nearly 16,000 donors on an annual basis, again among the nation’s leaders in number of donors. Private gifts fund nearly 25 percent of the Athletic Department’s overall annual budget.
The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has identified two priority areas as key to its continued excellence: support for facilities and support for scholarships. |
