It seemed like Dr. Svendsen’s work with stem cells held out hope for treating and perhaps one day curing or possible preventing Parkinson’s disease, ALS and similar neural diseases and damage. We thought, 'If we’re donating to the UW already, why not direct some of it to this research that can really change lives for the better?' | The Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, established in 1970, promotes the understanding of global environmental issues that are vital to preserving the earth's natural resources. The Nelson Institute defines and solves environmental problems through a unique combination of transdisciplinary instruction, research and outreach. The leading goals are to protect the environment for future generations by seeking environmentally sound ways to sustain human existence, and to train leaders in this crucial area.
The Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies is known through the country for its ability to draw on the expertise of more than 150 faculty from a variety of campus disciplines. The transdisciplinary curriculum includes air, water and land resources, conservation biology, sustainable development, energy analysis and policy, environmental monitoring and climatic research, as well as the arts, humanities and social sciences.
