The primary reason we decided to start a scholarship was the gratitude we felt toward those who provided funding for the scholarships we earned while in medical school. We wanted to start something that would grow as our careers grew. | Great people. | “Great people.” focuses on three simple, yet synergistic elements: undergraduates, graduate/professional students and faculty. It combines support for outstanding faculty with support for outstanding students—the intellectual capacity of campus and the core of the University’s greatness.
In 2007, the University of Wisconsin Foundation Board of Directors voted unanimously to segregate $20 million for a need-based financial aid challenge program. As a public university – one of the best in the world – we want the brightest, most promising students to believe that a UW-Madison education is possible.
The Faculty Staff Great People Scholarship Initiative began with a resolution from the Faculty Senate, followed by Academic Staff Assembly and classified staff approval, focusing on need-based undergraduate student support. The UW Foundation is matching gifts for the first time—1 to 1 for campus-wide scholarships, and 1 to 2 for college or school scholarships. This program includes all the schools, colleges and professional schools. |

 | Great place. | | “Great place.” refers to the East Campus Gateway. This renovation of the eastern edge of campus will unify new structural elements in the area with existing and traditional spaces such as the Memorial Union Terrace and Library Mall. The Gateway will have gathering places, plantings, plazas, public art and a vibrant pedestrian mall linking the lakeshore with Regent Street.
Elements of the East Campus Gateway include an expanded Chazen Museum of Art, School of Music performance and academic buildings, a hockey facility and unified art facilities.
Adding to the liveliness of the area will be the University Square redevelopment project, a public-private partnership that will bring University Health Services, a new Student Activities Center and Student Services together under one roof. Private-sector development will provide new retail, commercial and housing space.
These developments, along with a major remodeling of the iconic Memorial Union, will bring new activity, usefulness and a sense of educational vitality to this critical campus junction between the University and the city of Madison. |
