We’re interested in everything the Waisman Center does. We also believe that we should give back to our alma mater.

Botany Garden Gets a Spring Greening

Members of the Class of 1952 remember the space between Lathrop and Sterling Halls as tennis courts. In 1961, the courts were replaced with the half-acre Botany Garden making this one of the most beautiful spots on campus for study and contemplation. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Class of ’52 is helping to make a major expansion and renovation of the Botany Garden possible.

The new garden will feature trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials and annuals with more than 500 species representing 100 families and 40 taxonomic orders of plants from around the world. The plants will all be planted according to their taxonomic classification making it easier to identify plants according to their genetic relationships to one another. That’s for those interested in teaching, research and reference.

For those interested primarily in enjoying the quiet pleasures of a garden, there will be benches, a pond complete with footbridge and waterfall, and specialized habitats such as a prairie, marsh and rock garden. An inviting new entrance at Mills Street and University Avenue will welcome visitors. In the middle of this campus sanctuary will be the Class of 1952 Central Plaza where graduates of this class and other classes past and future can come to renew friendships, share stories or simply remember.
