| | Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Madison, Wisconsin is now home to the recently completed Thai Pavilion and Garden. The stunning pavilion, or sala, was given to the UW-Madison by the Thai chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association and the Thai government in appreciation of the UW and the community.
The UW-Madison, in turn, gave the structure to the city of Madison, strengthening the educational link between the community and the UW. "This gift illustrates the loyalty that the alumni and the people of Thailand hold for the University and the city of Madison," said LaMar Billups, special assistant to the UW Chancellor John Wiley.
When planning began in 2000, the UW-Madison had graduated more than 700 Thai residents, and had the largest number of Thai students of any U.S. college or university. The teak pavilion was designed and constructed in Thailand, following principles of traditional Thai construction, using no screws or nails. It was then taken apart, shipped to Madison, and rebuilt by Thai artisans. |
